Daisy embroidery is a simple way to add an elegant embellishment to any piece of hand stitched fabric. Lazy daisy stitch (also known as detached chain stitch) is a series of single loops that can be placed together to create flowers, in a line to make leaves, or by themselves to create interesting borders and embellishments. It’s a stitch that is found in many of the Wandering Thread Embroidery Patterns!
To begin, draw a flower shape on the surface of your embroidery hoop using a pencil or water-soluble marker. You’ll also want to place the hoop under a light box or sunny window to see the drawing more clearly.
Use the satin stitch for the petals. Work with three strands of white floss to create a petal that slightly fanns out along the edge. Begin in the center and outline the petals with a split backstitch. Add French knots to the center of the flower. Embellish the petals with a running stitch. If you’d like, add nectar guides with a straight stitch.
To make a lazy daisy stitch, bring your needle up where you’d like the first petal to be. Push the needle down, but don’t pull it all the way through. This leaves a little loop on the top of the petal. Continue making stitches in this manner to fill the circle of petals. Stitch a tiny stitch over the loop to secure it. For the stems, we’ll use long split stitch with one strand of floss. This is similar to the long & short stitch we used for the outlined stem on Daisy #1, and it will give our stems a nice sketchy look that will contrast with the more defined petals.
