Here Gatsby reveals that he believes it is possible to repeat the past, a statement that demonstrates his naivety and optimism. This is at odds with the cynical worldview of Nick Carraway, and shows that Gatsby is willing to risk everything for his love of Daisy.
Daisy takes Nick aside during dinner at her Long Island mansion and tells him she hopes her daughter will be a “beautiful fool.” While this comment may seem sincere, it is actually sarcastic. Daisy wants to be a fool, and she hopes her daughter will too, as it is better for rich women of her era to remain ignorant about their husbands’ affairs.
In this quote, we see a glimpse of the real Daisy. While she is happy to see Gatsby, her happiness is masked by her desire for her former life with Tom. Gatsby does not understand this, and he thinks she would give up anything to revive their old memories together. This is a major part of why he continues to pursue her even after she has told him that her only priority is her family.
Throughout the chapter, we are exposed to many of the flaws in Daisy’s character. Her desire for wealth and power leads to her exploitation of others, including Jordan Baker and Myrtle Wilson. Her constant displays of opulence also show that she is shallow and vapid. These character traits are reinforced by her comments to Nick about Tom and her hope that her daughter will be a beautiful fool.
