How to Care For Daisy Plants

There are many types of daisies plants. The most famous and common species is the bellis perennis, a member of the family Asteraceae. It is also called the lawn daisy, English daisy, or common daise. Regardless of its name, it is a popular flower. You can even get one for your dog! It grows to be over three feet tall and has a delicate and attractive fragrance.

The flowering time of daisies varies depending on the variety, but they are best planted in the spring. The flowering period varies from early June to the first frost, and the flowers bloom throughout the season. When planting daisies in the fall, you will be establishing their root systems before they start to flower. You can expect your four-inch transplant to produce as many blooms as a one-gallon plant in the spring, but you can plant new plants each year to get a longer season of blooming. If you leave the spent flowers on the stem, the plants will reseed.

If you want to enjoy a long, beautiful bloom, daisies are drought tolerant plants that need very little water. They will thrive in most garden soils, but they need plenty of water. Pour water over the top of the plant every morning and evening for the first two years, and then fertilize them twice a month. After three or four years, divide your daisies to make more. A young plant will bloom again in early autumn and you can even share the flowers with your neighbors.
