Katy Perry’s latest single is a powerful anthem on the importance of following your dreams, no matter what people tell you. In a new interview with BBC, the pop star explains that “Daisies” is about “not letting anyone take away the goals and dreams that you have for yourself.”
The track was co-written by Perry and Monsters and Strangers producer Jordan K. Johnson. It marks her first release since 2017’s Witness, though she did drop a few standalone singles this year, including Never Worn White and Harleys in Hawaii.
In the song, Perry describes how people often laugh at her wild dreams and think she’s out of her mind. However, she insists that she’ll keep going until she’s “covered in daisies.” The lyrics are a nod to the popular idiom, which means someone is dead. The singer might also be referring to the difficult times she’s been through in her career, especially the backlash she received from some of her more controversial music choices.
Despite these challenging times, Perry seems to be in a good place now. Her daughter Daisy Dove Bloom was born this year, and she’s enjoying a happy, healthy relationship with her fiance Orlando Bloom. Plus, she recently released her sixth album, Smile. Hopefully, the singer’s optimistic outlook will help her maintain her success for years to come.
