The Eels – Daisies of the Galaxy

Eels’ third studio album Daisies of the Galaxy was released on February 28, 2000, in the United Kingdom, and March 14, 2000, in the United States. The record was produced in conjunction with the film “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” by director Chris Columbus and was produced by Ryan Gosling and Jason Blum. The album was a critical and commercial success, and was certified Gold in the United Kingdom. The record’s title refers to its theme song, “Disney is a Star.”

The Eels’ new album is the follow up to 1998’s Electro-Shock Blues. The title track, “Grace Kelly,” was a hit in the 1950s, and the album’s opener, “Flyswatter,” was inspired by the singer’s cat. The jazz shuffle “A Daisy Through the Concrete,” is a surprisingly uplifting tune. It’s a brilliant listen.

Like its predecessor, Electro-Shock Blues, Daisies of the Galaxy is a summery album with cynical undertones. The opening track, “Grace Kelly,” pays tribute to the iconic singer from the 1950s. Songs like “Flyswatter,” “It’s a Motherfucker,” and “A Daisy Through the Concrete” are inspired by the band member’s cat. The album’s humour is as refreshing and astute as its lyrics, and the music is perfectly fitting for the story it tells.

The album was a smash hit for the Eels, resulting in a reissue of their first album in nine years. Daisies of the Galaxy charted the grieving process of singer E, originally Mark Oliver Everett. The song was released as the first single off the LP, “Novocaine for the Soul”, and was later remixed by a variety of artists. It was a wildly successful debut for The Eels, but it also had some flaws. The songs on the album were all written by E, while the music was a masterpiece.
