Wildflowers – Daisy Flowers

Daisy flowers are the classic wildflower, often a welcome sight in a garden or in a flower arrangement. They symbolize innocence, purity, new beginnings and love.

The daisy plant belongs to the Asteraceae family, which also includes sunflowers and chrysanthemums. Its flower heads consist of a single head of tiny florets surrounded by rays of long petals. The ‘Lemon Symphony’ and ‘Bright Lights Double Moonglow’ daisies are two examples of yellow-colored daisies that grow well in the sun.

Like the common dandelion, Bellis perennis is a popular garden flower that can be found growing in lawns and meadows around the world. It is a cheerful flower with radiating white petals surrounding a yellow center disk and can be a bit invasive in some gardens.

Another favorite is the chocolate daisy (Leucanthemum x leucanthemum). Its flowers have multiple rows of long, thin white petals that create bushy flowerheads that look as beautiful in the garden as they do in a vase. It is a perennial that can be enjoyed year-round in mild climates and grows well in sunny, moderately fertile soil.

If you want to try growing a big-flowered daisy, choose the gerbera daisy (Gerbera marianum). It’s an annual that blooms from spring through fall in USDA hardiness zones 9-11. It prefers full sun exposure, and it can be grown in containers, too. Give it well-draining, rich soil and fertilizer for maximum growth and flowering.
