Are Daisies Safe For Cats?

Despite being cheerful and pretty, daisies are not safe for cats. In fact, they’re one of several flowers that can trigger gastrointestinal distress and other symptoms in felines if they’re eaten.

The flower’s primary toxins are lactones, pyrethrins and sesquiterpene, which work to deter insects and animals that might feed on the plant, explains Miriam Feller, DVM, of Twin Cities Veterinary Hospital in Corte Madera, California. When ingested by cats, the toxins can affect the intestines and mouth, leading to skin irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting and diarrhea, she adds. In severe cases, the toxins can lead to difficulty walking and bloody stool.

These flowers can also prompt an allergic reaction, says Lauren Cline, DVM, of Queen City Animal Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. In this case, a cat may develop a rash where it touched the flower or petals, and it will scratch or bite at the area, trying to relieve the irritation. Owners will also notice a subdued behavior and a loss of coordination in their pet.

To keep your cat safe, keep daisies and other plants out of reach. Creating a cat-free zone, with natural barriers or fences, is one way to do so. Scattering orange peels or chicken wire can also act as a barrier, and limiting your cat’s outdoor time will help prevent them from seeking out unsafe plants. Providing plenty of toys and playing with them can also help to keep your cat entertained and preoccupied, making them less likely to snack on anything they shouldn’t have.
