Quilts have long been used to convey a wide variety of messages. From the earliest of times, they have expressed love for family and country. Patriotic quilts, made with American Eagles and George Washington, grew in popularity from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and again for our country’s Bicentennial celebration. Many of the most popular patterns were used to convey social concerns. The Drunkard’s Path quilt pattern, for example, is often associated with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union of 1907.
Star patterns have been among the most common of all. Homesteaders traveling West looked for stars as guides and viewed them as religious symbols of their faith in God. There are hundreds of different star quilt patterns, from very simple to highly complicated.
