Quilting is a time honored tradition that has grown in popularity over the years. It has always been a way for women to pass on their skills and to express themselves artistically. From patriotic patterns that portrayed love for their country, to patterns that reflected everyday life like baskets, teacups and flowers. Then there are those patterns that show the more socially conscious side of the quilters such as those that portrayed slaves or women’s rights.

Today’s political climate has inspired many quilters to make quilts that express their concern for their country, and the world at large. Often the quilter will rename patterns to reflect their specific concerns. The patterns that had been christened with Biblical or household names were given new names in the 1840’s to demonstrate their political sentiments. The renaming of the Job’s Tears pattern to Slave Chain, was a statement of women’s feelings about slavery.

Making a quilt that celebrates things that felt timeless to me, the English countryside in May, the traditions and skills of the women who made quilts in the past, the rich iconography of rural England and the joys and worries of daily mothering – all felt like a way to lean in to the sense of being part of a long chain of makers stretching back into history and find some calm in these choppy times.
